Fr. Gordon, we just put up 4400 crosses on the grounds of our church yesterday as a memorial to the innocents. Prayers for hearts to soften on the issue of abortion are necessary, as here in Ohio we have a very hard-hearted Senator who is convinced that public funding to Planned Parenthood should continue. I am convinced that PP is an exploiter and abuser of women. Pray, pray, pray!

As a point of law, the comparison of Roe v. Wade with Dred Scott is profoundly insightful. I had never before considered the fundamental similiarities in these two flawed decisions. How ironic that both were written as guarantees of a "freedom." Dred Scott affirmed the "freedom" of Southeners to own slaves.

Roe v. Wade affirmed the "freedom" of women to procure abortions. In both cases, what is called a freedom is nothing more than a license. The weak are disenfranchised of their fundamental rights and value as human beings by placing them at the mercy of the strong.

Thank you for writing so clearly. This post should have been a banner waved by your fellow priests and fellow Catholics, and it should have found a wide audience. The fact that it wasn't unfurled and disseminated proudly by the Church you serve is a justice issue of its own. The irony is not lost that you too are disenfranchised from a voice in the Catholic public square because of where you are.

Please continue to write with the courage, clarity, and courtesy you are becoming known and admired for in the face of injustice.

Thanks so much for this post Fr. McCrae.

I think my children need to learn about Fr. Crowley and his courage to stand up for the truth.

Aloha Father, what a great post to commemorate the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I was not familiar with Fr. Crowley. Thanks so much for writing this one. Hope all is well.

Thank you, Fr.Gordon, for the tributes....

Yes, John P.Crowley was one of the many unsung heroes of those Selma yrs, PBS did a fine documentary called...Sisters of Selma: bearing
witness for change......John died before they could face to face interview him...but he is remembered in three places...the Selma historian reads a section of the Path to Peace, John's picture is with the mayor and the nuns cutting the ribbon to open the new section of Good Samaritan Hospital, and walking behind the hearse bearing the body of Jimmy Lee, ...

I had the privilege of being invited to the first showing of that documentary in Selma as a guest of the City of Selma and the Producer of the PBS Doc,...I went and met many of those who served with John ...it was an honor ...i wish he could have been there but I know he was in spirit,....he loved Selma, and yes, i am footnoting the rough draft of a memoir he wrote of those years a month before he died.....he writes about visiting Brother Martin in jail, the times he spent with Brother Martin when he came to Selma, etc.....thank you again, Fr. Gordon, for your great gifted writing and graced self....

Sincerely, Dolores Crowley

As Fr. Pavone and Bishop Quinn of Detroit said at a Mass for the aborted babies found in dumpsters in the Southfield area of Michigan. "These babies will be there to meet you in heaven "

These pro-life and civil rights heros in your post will never be forgotten by us pray-ers at the abortion mills. They lead us on even now and encourage all to fight this horrible travesty.
I especially love the cartoon!!

It's been quite a week. We are praying for Christian unity, Monday was Dr. Martin Luther King Day and today on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade we have the annual March for Life in Washington, DC and the bishops have asked us to observe a "day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the Right to Life."

Those who deny the connection between "Dred" and "Roe" simply refuse to see the obvious. Remember, it was the Quakers who said slavery was wrong 100 years before the Civil War. Never give up the fight. Today, I was not able to march for life in Washington but I am with the marchers right now in spirit.

I offered Mass today at Camp Barber Chapel, Hellmand Provence, Afghanistan for Peace and Justice. This one was for you Fr. Gordon, the babies, lasting peace, and true justice for all. Stay strong.

Semper fidelis, Fr. Joe

Dear Father,

Thank you for the story of Fr Crowley; I had not known about him. The similarities between Dred Scott and Roe V. Wade are so clear to those who will see them. I believe God is raising up others in that same spirit of Dr. King and Fr Crowley.

Alveda King speaks out tirelessly for civil rights and the rights of the unborn, along with countless others who have committed this horrible sin and repented of it and are now among the best defenders of life. I thank God for Dr. King, Fr Crowley and Fr Neuhas for blazing this trail.
As always you are in my prayers.

Thank you Father for such an interesting post. When I get disheartened by the lack of headway in the struggle to restore the protection of the Law to the unborn I remind myself of the long and patient struggle that anti slavery and pro civil rights campaigners had to undertake and it is heartening to remember that eventually they managed to get the wider public to recognise what was at stake and to bring about change for the better.
