Father,
Your comment has made me realise that members of the Church hierarchy have unwittingly helped the devil by following "worldly" advice and it is a wicked thing indeed which has meant the loss of good priests who could be doing do much good in their crucial role of a conduit for sacramental graces.

The devil is such a shrewd tactician it is disheartening but then I remember that Our Blessed Mother conquers him and I place all priests in her care.

I am deeply grateful for the wonderful work of people like Charlene and Suzanne, whom I have no doubt the Holy Spirit has raised up to fight this ongoing scandal of betrayal and injustice towards good and faithful priests who have been made scapegoats.

Our Holy Mother is full of love and compassion for our priests.

God Bless you Father

Mary's comment above was read to me today, and I am dictating this reply to Charlene who is kind enough to type it for me.

Mary's comment about falsely accused priests being coerced into plea deals is very astute, and I'm glad she raised this issue. I recently heard from a 74 yr. old priest who was accused by a 16 yr. old forty years ago. He protested his innocence but the teenager wanted $40,000 to go away.

The diocese convinced the priest to just go along with the settlement because it's cheaper, and they insisted that it would not be seen as a measure of his guilt. He accepted that advice, and then 34 yrs. later was removed from ministry by the Dallas Charter because his agreeing to the settlement made the accusation "credible."

Now at 74, he is living alone as an outcast in a rented room in an urban rooming house. Many priests have no awareness of how much the settlement game has put them in harm's way. Thank you, Mary, for raising this.

God bless,
Fr. Gordon

If there are any courageous, intelligent Catholic lawyers reading this site can you not unite to form a sort of case review commission that goes back over cases that were dealt with in haste?

I have an awful feeling that Father MacRae may not be the only priest falsely accused and I wonder how many others were so frightened at the thought of prison that they accepted "deals" rather than insist they were not guilty?

There is a complete reversal now It seems any accused priest is presumed guilty.

"The new claims were themselves alarming. Forty percent were against deceased priests who had never before been accused. This is no longer about legitimate victims of abuse."

Oh my- this statement floored me...

The Church opened up these floodgates and are helpless to close them now. To think that any good and kind priest can be subjected to this witch hunt and be virtually thrown into the fire with little or no help, support or hope... it breaks my heart.
