Thank you, everyone. Charlene just read to me these posts by Mary, Julie, Karin, Jan and Esther. I much appreciate Charlene's reading these and typing my reply, and I very much appreicate your comments. I sure hope I am not sued by any spaghetti company. It just happened to be Clint Eastwood's first meal at Alcatraz. I'm really glad Suzanne found a nice photo of Clint.

There are a lot of people in the world who are hungrier than any of us in prison. I seldom complain about the food, and in fact it isn't quite as bad as I imagined it would be when I was on my way here for the first time on that fateful day in 1994. I guess the bottom line is that like people everywhere, we make do with what we have.

To answer some of your questions, I am moved that you would consider sending us something, but in this prison we cannot receive anything whatsoever except first class mail. Food packages are not allowed, nor can we receive anything else in the mail except a letter. Jan asked why the main meal of the day is at 3:45. That does seem early especially by British standards.

Each unit has to eat in the chow hall, and there are some 1500 prisoners sharing space and facilities meant for half that number. The schedule is kept very strictly. There is also a staff that wants to go home at the end of their shift. Thank you, everyone. I'm glad you liked this post. It's a little lighter than my last few, but I had some fun writing it. If you try these recipes at home, be careful of that last one :D.

You are each remembered daily in prayer. Thank you for your remembrance at Mass. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Wonderful post Father! I couldn't decide whether to share it on my main blog (Catholic) or cooking one :-) BTW, your blog has been added to my sidebar and you are in my prayers at daily Mass. God bless,

My goodness Father, how creative :) I do feel a bit sick now though :) I remember the film scene also, Thanks for that. ha ha I had spaghetti for tea. (really) I think it is awful how meagre your daily meals are., can i ask why is your main meal at 3.45pm?

Its very early. You must tell us what we can do to help? Can we send food parcels to prisoners? or money so you can buy better products. I hate to think of you all hungry, it is a basic right to be fed substantial food surely. I praise you Father for your continued sense of humour.

I know how grouchy I can be when hungry so I take my hat off to you. Mind you I don't think I will eat spaghetti for a while.

with much love and blessings Father

love Jan

ps I wonder what Gordon Ramsey could cook on a $1.00 a day. :)

Father,

Love this culinary post. You and your fellow prisoners are quite creative. maybe Food Network should give you all your own version of Iron Chef :) (You certainly need iron stomachs to eat some of those things!)

My prayers continue and this week I will offer a special one for perhaps some better sources of protein to come your way.

God Bless!

Oh and I remember that scene in that movie- I had the same reaction as your niece.

I actually want to try some of those. I work for the Church so I'm as broke as you are. (no joke, not insulting inmates..being totally serious)

That said...is there something some of us can do from the outside? I can offer recipes which maybe can't be done there, but maybe will add to more ingenuity.

Can any of us help with physical items?

Myself, in college like so many others, Ramen was a staple, but there could be worse food. (I think of what Fr. Ciszek ate...am amazed ANYONE survived on that. The Soviets were far better to their prisoners than the Nazis, that's for sure)

I guess I didn't realize American prisoners were so lacking in protein and other nutrients. Please tell us all what we can do, whether it benefits you and your fellow prisoners or those in our local area. I know that procedures tend to be "universal" and thus, so are deprivations.

How can we help, other than prayer? I don't have much myself, but I'm happy to offer what I do have in store, or maybe I have something a prisoner's family needs.

Please help us know.

A marvellous post Father,

I am in awe of your fellow inmates sheer ingenuity they deserve a chef's hat each!

I think I might postpone cooking spaghetti for a while till the word picture fades from memory. It is a shame the prison does not allow and encourage prisoners to have their own food gardens and poultry. The rations sound very Dickensian!

I realise most large institutions have to watch their budget but it all sounds very meagre fare indeed. I hope they do something special for Christmas.

I imagine it must be a bit dispiriting to be the head cook in such a situation.

Thank you for such an informative post Father.

God Bless
