If you’ve been following weather reports, you know that New England spent the last two weeks in a record-breaking heatwave. As I write this, Concord, New Hampshire is facing its sixth straight day of 95-degree heat with humidity in the “oppressive” range. My typewriter just doesn’t’ deal well with the humidity – nor do I – so I decided on a summer re-run for my post today.
“A Corner of the Veil” is about the death of my mother, Sophie Kavanagh MacRae, during my imprisonment. Tomorrow, July 15, is her birthday so this post in her honor is my choice for a summer re-run. I would much appreciate a prayer for her as well.

May her memory be eternal!
Dear Father:
Prayers for your mom tomorrow at St Anthony’s Shrine on Arch St in Boston on my lunch hour.
Hi Father G,
Thought I would have to miss out on being in touch. My computer had a nervous breakdown! Have just managed to get back on line but at a much slower rate on a second hand model!
I am not a very patient person passive yae patient no so I have been really grumpy wrestling with my technical ineptitude then I manage to get to your post and feel humbled and ashamed of my trivial and petty concerns. I will be praying for your dear mother who continues to “mother” you , Pornchai and Skooter from heaven.
And may the Independence of France on this day so many years ago be regained through faith and action once more if need be in other nations, including ours.
some good news: poll after polls shows teens are NOT fond of rampant sex and abortion and as you may have seen on EWTN we have science on our side in this, maybe not all the scientists, but very convicting research results.
Your suffering is aiding so many souls as yours is added to that of Jesus.
Hello Father,
You are loved and as I was reading somewhere, you are very possibly working out your purgatory here on earth. How divine for the rest of us to see it and to hear as your heart changes.
EWTN has become such the dominant channel and I cannot imagine NOT saying the rosary daily. I have recently had the call to go to mass daily and when I miss it I watch on EWTN.
My sensitivity to crudity and cruelty has always been high, but it seems to be refined now, while I know that those who do the most evil are the most sorrowful of children, those who ‘know not what they do’. I am aware of my sinfulness, yet beginning to understand that I am so loved for who I am, a profound responsibility to be worthy of that love and to strive for sainthood (while knowing it’ll be solely due to some tremendous efforts of the Holy Spirit for me to ever get there!) so that my prayers need less filtering to be heard by God on behalf of someone.
In these days, with the fear and the ingratitude it is true that prison isolation is not completely absent from our understanding, but you have the incarceration and the plugged container of evil with which to contend.
We DO know that as soon as this injustice happened God’s grace turned it to a profoundly divine thing, to be worked out in so many miracles.
None of us knows to what extent will be our trials, our martyrdom. You are not lucky to have this trial, but being unjustly accused and searching ever more intensely for humility and grace you are VERY lucky to know that Satan is most extremely flayed by your faith.Knowing that a means has been found to expose your faith to so many others is yet more grace to drive Satan to rage.
God bless you, Sweet Servant.
Jeannie
Of course Father, I and all of us will pray I am sure for the repose of your Mother’s soul. The original post was so beautiful, as to how you recovered the precious photograph.
Prayers as always dear Fr Gordon

Dear Father,
I too am not a fan of the heat and humidity. We here in NJ have finally received some much needed rain- hopefully that will break the humidity.
Prayers for your Mom and continued prayer for you and your fellow prisoners as well.
